“The Vienna International Center (VIC) 1967-1979”
The VIC, popular called UNO City, is a very important building in Viennese history.
Initial idea of setting up international organization in Vienna came from minister Dr.Bruno Kreisky. For political reasons ÖVP did offer UNO to build blocks of offices for nothing. Vienna City council made a gift for building ground in the 22nd urban district and took 35% of building costs.65 % took the state.
The UNO-City was built after planning’s by architect Johann Staber.
Mai 1973 was the start of works by some firms how. In this time I was engaged by SIEMENS as electrical engineer and so my boss delegated me to do in managerial capacity electrical equipments. The UNO-City was built between 1973 and1979 just north of the river Danube. Six Y-shaped office towers surround a cylindrical conference building for a total floor area of 230.000 square metres. The highest tower is 120 metres high, enclosing 28 floors. On 23rd of August 1979 the UNO-City was delivered from Austrian government to UNO-organisations IAEO (International Atomic Energy Agency) and UNIDO (United Nations Industrial development Organization)
Since then about 5.000 people have been working there.
After this time the UNO was added with the last building the Austrian Center Vienna a conference and exhibition center with capacity of 6.000 visitors. Siemens AG Austria and my team didn’t get order from employer and so we came to the next road works. I gladly remember with proudness of this busy time.
Then I was 32, a young man and full of hope for future.
1975 Inspection by some technical engineers, the second man from right it’s me.
